Formation following quake said to resemble first Dusun man to scale Mt Kinabalu

KUNDASANG, June 8, 2015: Surface formation following the earthquake aftermath is said to resemble Datuk Gunting Lagadan, the first Dusun man to scale Mount Kinabalu.

Dusun is one of the more than 70 ethnic groups in Sabah.

A lodge on the mountain has also been named in his honour.

The “image” was initially thought to be of Aki Nabalu, which is the mountain’s name in the Dusun language.

A photo of the surface formation and that of Lagadan have gone viral and are being circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp.

The images hold a lot of fascination following the earthquake tragedy on Friday that has resulted in at least 16 deaths and many injuries on the revered mountain and property damage in the surrounding areas.

The Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) community believes that the spirits of their ancestors dwell among the bare rocks of Mount Kinabalu top.

According to local folklore, Aki Nabalu, which literally means “the revered place of the dead”, is the story of a broken-hearted wife who turned into stone waiting for the return of her husband.

Some say it is a giant king and it remained unshaken until Friday morning after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit most parts of Sabah.

Since the quake, the people have been lifting their eyes to the mountains seeking help from their god.

Many blamed the sacrilegious act by a group of Europeans who posed butt naked on Mount Kinabalu recently and thus desecrated the site revered as sacred to the people of Sabah.

The group of 10 tourists, believed to include two Canadians, two Dutch and a German national, were butt naked when they posed upon reaching the peak of Mount Kinabalu on May 29 morning.

Of the 187 climbers,  a total of 16 deaths have been recorded and two more have not been accounted for.

‘EC must refer to Malaysia Agreement 1963 for delineation plans involving Sarawak, Sabah’

KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) should adhere to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 as the reference for any proposed constituency delineation exercise.

PRS Youth deputy chief Sempurai Petrus Ngelai concurred with party president Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing who recently said the legality of the Malaysian Federation could be questioned if the 1963 Agreement was not honoured.

Sempurai feared that any act to the contrary would breach the said Agreement and in turn, could open a floodgate in which any federal bodies would begin to ignore or refuse to abide by the said accord.

“It is puzzling to us as to why the EC said it’s not bound by the 1963 Agreement when it has clearly spelt out that East Malaysia should be given one-third of parliamentary seats. We urge the commission to observe the Agreement and allocate one-third of the parliamentary seats accordingly.

“We must uphold the fundamental principles under the Malaysia Agreement. Therefore, any act to the contrary clearly denies the existence of this accord,” he said in a statement to The Borneo Post yesterday.

On Thursday, Masing was quoted as having said that EC should honour and uphold the terms entailed in the 1963 Agreement as it remains the foundation for the country’s formation.

“If the accord is not honoured, then the Federation of Malaysia should be declared null and void,” he said.

Masing was responding to EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, who said that any allocation of seats must be dealt with according to the constitution; not by way of any agreement that would not be binding on the commission’s part.

On this, PRS Youth publicity chief Bit Surang believed that the legality of the nation would be at stake should Abdul Aziz’s statement be taken into account.

“The EC chairman is obviously ignorant about the history of the formation of Malaysia. By saying that EC is not bound by the Malaysia Agreement 1963, he is in fact, questioning the validity of the Agreement.

“Abdul Aziz said any review on the matter must take into account the composition ratio of the parliamentary seats agreed at the formation of the (Malaysian) Federation. Back then, Malaya was allocated 104 seats representing 65 per cent of the parliamentary seats; with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore combined getting 55 seats or 35 per cent. But after Singapore left, where did the 15 seats go to?

“Sabah and Sarawak must collectively be given 35 per cent of the seats in Parliament, which means a combine minimum of 78 seats out of 222 in Dewan Rakyat. Currently, Sabah and Sarawak have 56 seats in Parliament,” he pointed out.

Bit also said the government should revisit the recommendation in Paragraphs 165 and 190(g) of the Cobbold Commission Report, which states: “Representation of the Borneo territories shall take into account not only of their population but also their size and potentialities.”

He added: “We must also ensure fairer and more equitable distribution of funds for each constituency, as well as access to facilities and amenities by the people in both states.”

Sabah and Sarawak saviours, not fixed deposits, says academic

Describing voters in Sabah and Sarawak as "fixed deposits" for Barisan Nasional (BN) is degrading, an academic said, adding that the Bornean states were better called "saviours" of the ruling coalition.

University Putra Malaysia's politics and government expert professor Dr Jayum Anak Jawan said Sabah and Sarawak had time and again ensured Malay politics in the states survived for BN, which would otherwise be faring worse in elections.

"Sabah and Sarawak are not a fixed deposit, I think that is very degrading.

"Please don't use fixed deposit. Sabah and Sarawak are the saviour of a sunken ship. Without Sabah and Sarawak, Barisan Nasional is no where. We have been saving West Malaysian politics for more or less three or four times in history," he said at a conference today.

"Before this, we came over to save Malaya from the emergency in 1948. In 1963, we came to ensure Malay politics remained, as our population was to balance the Chinese population in Singapore," Jayum said, referring to the formation of Malaysia in 1963 when Sabah, Sarawak, Malaya and Singapore came together. Singapore left the federation two years later.

Jayum said BN's political problems were race-based between the Malay and Chinese votes and had little to do with Sarawak and the Dayaks –  the broad term used to collectively describe the indigenous people of the state.

"This is all Malay-Chinese problem, it is not a Sarawak and Dayak problem, but we have been coming to resolve, to bring peace between these two political warring ethnic groups," he said at a conference called "The 13th Malaysian General Elections: The Sarawak Perspective" in Kuala Lumpur.

Jayum said Sabah and Sarawak had again saved Malay politics in the 2008 and 2013 general elections, when BN leaders began using the term "fixed deposit" to describe the east Malaysian states which remained with the ruling coalition despite inroads by the opposition.

Jayum also said later during a question-and-answer session that it was unreasonable for Sabah and Sarawak's citizens to say they were still undeveloped, since they had chosen to vote for BN all this while.

"Is that the fault of federal government or the fault of state government, or your own fault?

"If the representation from Sabah and Sarawak is unfair, why do Sabah and Sarawak people still stay in Barisan Nasional?

"If Sabah and Sarawak says that they are unfairly treated, yet keep on telling the people that we still (lag) behind, then what are (we) doing in Barisan Nasional the last 50 years?" Jayum said.

On that score, Jayum said he agreed with other analysts that BN would win the upcoming Sarawak elections, except for seats in urban Chinese areas which have swung to the opposition in recent polls.

But he also predicted a rough ride for BN now that greater political awareness had come to the Dayaks.

"The state elections will be challenging. I don't expect the state BN to lose, but I'm not sure whether they will be able to keep their two-thirds majority because the focus now is on the Dayaks," he said.

Dayak seats form some 45% of state seats in Sarawak, and Jayum said more natives were beginning to realise that there was nothing wrong in voting against the ruling party or government.

He said this "wind of change" among the Dayaks was coming from the younger generation, who were more politically aware and informed of their rights.

He said this would not have much impact on the coming state polls which must be held by August 2016, as such awareness was still new, but he believed it was an indication of things to come. – June 9, 2015.

UNFINISHED PROCESS OF DECOLONIZATION UNDER UNDD 1960

You see, Singapore declared UDI (Unilateral Declaration of Independence) on 31 Aug 1963, which was not recognised by Britain and Malaya. For a British colony to have its independence restored, the British Parliament must pass the independence act for the colony.

Singapore merged with Malaya on 16 Sep 1963 to form Malaysia. Malaysia is a sovereign nation, Malaysia is Malaya as verified by United Nations on 16 Sep 1963, just name tweaked a bit. Westminster did not pass the Parliament Act to decolonize its colonies - Spore, Sarawak, North Borneo. instead Malaysia Act in 1963 was passed in the British Parliament, vesting the power in Malaysia to hold the sovereignty of these British colonies. this is a direct transfer of colonialism, sukarno called it neo-colonialism.

The british were fond of choosing friendly regimes to pass their colonies to, who would continue their military (and US too) and economic interests in this strategic region.

In 1965, Singapore left.

The British Parliament still had to pass the Singapore Act in Westminster in 1966.

Why would Britain need to do this if Spore was independent territory in Malaysia 63-65?

But this final step is the most important process to complete decolonization. i repeat, full and complete decolonization means the colony (non-self-governing territory) is given national independence with the colonial power passing an Act to grant independence UNCONDITIONALLY AND UNRESERVEDLY.

This is the final step wanting for Sarawak and Sabah.

This is what we had been saying all the time, that is why the Peoples' Petition to United Nations is addressed to the Special Decolonization Committee C-24. to put SS back on the decolonization path, like french polynesia. we still need British Parliament to pass the Sarawak Act and Sabah Act for us to gain national independence. I always said Singapore set the precedent.

So, Sarawak and Sabah are still in the unfinished process of decolonization under United Nations Decolonization Declaration 1514, 1960.

‘S’wak only stating the obvious’ dues under M’sia Agreement – Masing

KUCHING: Sarawak’s demand for more autonomy is a case of wanting what was due to the state under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and nothing more.

Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing who said this, added that the state is merely requesting for rights that was agreed upon the formation of Malaysia and nothing less.

The senior minister added that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem was stating the obvious when the latter made this request during the meet-the-people rally with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak here on Thursday.

“The Federal boys shouldn’t get excited by Sarawak’s request. We just want what is due to us. Just don’t short-change Sarawak,” Masing told thesundaypost yesterday.

At Thursday’s programme attended by some 12,000 people comprising state Barisan Nasional (BN) component party members and BN affiliate members, Adenan said the state wants its autonomy to be reinstated. The chief minister added that both the state and federal governments were in negotiation on the terms for the devolution of powers to some of the state agencies.

Adenan was reported as saying that at the moment, decisions have to go through a lot of red tape before it is approved at federal level whereas some of the decisions could be done here. He also mentioned that implementation could be better as Sarawakians know the problem here better.

Najib, during his speech afterwards, acknowledged the need for the devolution while explaining it will expedite Sarawak’s development plan.

In this regards, Masing who is Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president, reminded that Peninsular Malaysia must understand that in essence, without Sarawak and Sabah, there is no Malaysia.

“It would only be the Federation of Malaya,” he quipped.

The state’s autonomy at present covers its right to manage land, forest resources and immigration in accordance with the Federation of Malaysia Agreement signed on Sept 13, 1963.

Some of the federal government agencies, namely health, education and immigration are currently headed by Sarawakians as part of the Borneonisation policy as stated in the accord.

Penerangan Ringkas Mengenai Gempabumi Ranau

Intrusi batuan igneus Gunung Kinabalu berlaku sekitar 7-8 juta tahun dahulu.

Semasa gempabumi semalam, air panas poring menjadi sangat keruh selama beberapa jam.

NEGARA SABAH MEMPUNYAI GUNUNG BERAPI! TAPI BUKAN GUNUNG KINABALU

Sabah quake: ‘Sorrowful’ atmosphere on mountain, says guide who led students on trip

SINGAPORE — Adventure guide Mohamad Amin Mohamad Nor, 29, who had led the fateful trip that the Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) teachers and students made to Mount Kinabalu, had a recurring thought for the past two days as he stayed behind in Sabah to tie up the loose ends, including transporting home the trekkers’ personal belongings.

“What’s in my mind ... was it was me who brought them out (to Mt Kinabalu), I want to help to bring them all back ... Being the group leader who brought 39 others out with me, but I don’t have all of them back together with me … the feeling is just …” said Mr Amin, his voice breaking off mid-sentence.

Six TKPS Primary 6 students and one teacher were killed by the earthquake which struck on Friday morning. Mr Amin’s colleague, Muhammad Daanish Amran, 22, was among the fatalities.

Mr Amin, who was greeted by family and friends when he touched down at Changi Airport yesterday, was among three Camp Challenge guides who went on the trip with the TKPS trekkers.

He decided to return home on Sunday night to settle the administrative matters after completing his duties on Mount Kinabalu. Mr Amin, who has a decade of experience in guiding adventure tours, described the atmosphere on the mountain as “sorrowful”.

He can still vividly remember what happened when the earthquake struck. He had just finished helping some TKPS students — who were about to start on the Via Ferrata route — put on their helmets and harnesses, and had said goodbye. Back in his room, he felt the hut where the group was staying shake violently, and he ran out to the lounge area. “I was able to see a small part of the Via Ferrata (route) and there were big rocks rolling down. I knew the kids were already up there,” said Mr Amin.

Having little time to let what he saw sink in, he rushed back into the hut to ensure the safety of the other students.

Mr Amin said he will fondly remember the months of pre-trip training with the “energetic and lively” TKPS pupils. “I will still go along on such adventure trips in future, but taking along kids … I’m not sure … maybe,” he said.

Tahniah diucapkan!

Kepada rakyat Negara Sabah khususnya KDMR;

Pertama:

Personaliti Ringkas Tentang Diri Saya

Sabah Earthquake: They were never prepared because they never expect this thing to happen

Maximus Ongkili said the lack of respond by the SAR team is caused by lack of training and preparation of such type of disaster and most of them never expected it to happen, in his short meet with Wan Azizah at Kg Bundu Tuhan, Ranau Sabah.

"At the end it is the guide that lead the way. What do you expect the police to go up when they never train to go up the mountain in their life?" he said in respond to PKR President who highlight the respond over the SAR that angered many people especially the stranded climbers and mountain guide.

Maximus also said that he was told by a pilot that the helicopter is not mean to fly beyond 5,000 ft and to go 10,000 ft the air is thin, but Wan Azizah disagreed and mentioned a packaged food drop that failed to reach stranded climbers and fell of the valley.

Maximus explained further that the helicopter cannot maintain idle and have to keep moving because the air is thin on top of the mountain peak.

Wan Azizah urge the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water to better prepare for future disaster due to past tremors and hot spring where indicate it is an active area for earthquake.

Maximus was told by the bomba and the police that they never climb the mountain and he admit that they can do better by having a more permanent action plan as Mt Kinabalu is a world heritage site.

He also made comparison to the recent Genting Highland disaster when mud slide struck the valley along the places and even their SWAT team cannot do much work.

The Sabah Earthquake- have we forgotten to mourn together as a nation?

On September 16, 1963, 4 countries came together to form a new nation called the Federation of Malaysia. The 4 countries were Malaya (which was itself a federation of several states), Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. On August 9, 1965, Singapore declared her independence after she was expelled from of Malaysia leaving only 3 countries in the Federation.

Since her departure, Singapore has charted her own destiny and become the powerful and important city state financial centre that it is today. When her founder, Lee Kuan Yew died recently, the world stood at attention in respect of the man that had made Singapore what it is- a successful nation where everything works excellently.

The same success story could not be told of the 3 countries left in Malaysia. ‎Economic blackmails by the Federal government under Barisan Nasional in order to have political dominance over the state governments became the way business is done.

In the end, the development of the states were sabotaged by the very central government that the people elected to bring them prosperity. It became worse when several states came under opposition rule.

Outright sabotage of these states’ development which were hostile, while outright bribery of the states that supported the central government. That is how Sabah and Sarawak have become to be regarded as the electoral fixed deposit boxes by the central government politicians in Malaya.

Thus, the resentment towards Orang Malaya continues in these two states. In the end, the politicians of these states too played the political blackmail game and demanded political bribes, sometimes for their states, but most times for themselves, as a condition for supporting the BN central government.

That is the sorry state of affairs we have today which is unashamedly declared by PM Najib in Sarawak recently when he said that he and his wife can sleep on the same pillow because the people of Sarawak support him.

Sabah has been infiltrated many times by Filipino bandits. In the recent Lahad Datu epsiode, Sabah was even invaded‎ leading to the formation of Esscom which is supposed to ensure that the borders of Sabah, being the national borders of Malaysia will never be invaded again. But that was just an empty promise. Since then, more kidnappings have happened and Sabah remain ever exposed to invaders with the central government and military unable to do anything. Therein lies the broken promises that the Federation and the Federal Government made to Sabah which was never fulfilled.

The Federal Government could not and did not provide safety, peace and security to Sabah from foreign invaders. Sabah might as well have been part of the Philippines with such frequent incursions breaching it’s state borders. The Federal Government failed in that basic duty that it owed to a country in the Federation.

Najib's Saudi trip

That is not all. The terrible disease that has struck our nation is symptomatic when Sabah ‎suffered an earthquake just a few days ago. This was a natural disaster. There were deaths. The state is in mourning, but the Prime Minister did not go to Sabah. He has instead gone to Saudi Arabia to perform his umrah. Which is more important?

Yesterday was the Yang DiPertuan Agong’s birthday. There were celebrations and conferment of awards. Did the federal government and its ministers not think of the grief of Sabah? The Agong ‘s speech drafted by the federal government did not even mention Sabah’s disaster. A more appropriate action would be to cancel these celebrations and conferment of awards. But we did not do that.

If Sabah is an integral part of Malaysia, should we not abort all these ceremonies. Or have we simply forgotten to mourn together as a‎ nation?

Australian climber describes harrowing escape from Mount Kinabalu earthquake

Australian climber Vee Jin Dumlao was atop Malaysia's Mount Kinabalu when a magnitude-6.0 earthquake hit. When her group was left stranded by rescue officers, they decided to make the perilous journey down themselves.

It was supposed to be a quiet dawn climb.

Leaving at 2:30am for the top of Malaysia's Mount Kinabalu, Borneo's tallest mountain, a group of 137 climbers — including two Australians — reached the peak's granite plateau at dawn, and had expected to be back at Laban Rata for breakfast.

But at 7:30am, that plan abruptly changed.

"We had just completed the ascent to the peak, and [we were] making our descent, taking some photos when we heard a loud crash, and felt the ground shaking," Vee Jin Dumlao, a clinical psychologist from Sydney, told the ABC.

Though Ms Dumlao felt calm at first, panic set in when the group was told that the magnitude-6.0 earthquake that rocked the mountain had destroyed their route back.

"When our guide took our empty water bottles to be refilled, at perhaps 1:00pm ... they came back with news of massive landslides and the route having been decimated and no certainty of rescue," Ms Dumlao said.

The Malaysian rescue officials said they were making an effort to reach the climbers, but could not land a helicopter due to poor weather.

"Fog was quoted as the reason for not rescuing the climbers, that was certainly true earlier in day," Ms Dumlao said.

"However, around about 3:30pm the sky actually cleared right up, from ground level up to the mountains and that's when we thought there's nothing stopping them now from coming to get us.

"When the clouds lifted all the guides got a phone call from ground level to say 'alright the helicopters are coming'. We prepared ourselves, we organised ourselves into groups but nothing happened."

Despite the clearer weather, the climbers and their guides were told by officials that they would not be evacuated until the next morning.

"We were not equipped for an overnight stay, it was an open place, we couldn't huddle along any walls, because that's where the risk of landslide was worst," Ms Dumlao said.

"Many in the group were already getting hypothermia, it was very cold up in the mountains, it was starting to rain at some point, some of the climbers were already getting wet and we hadn't eaten since 1:00am that morning.

"And that's when the guides said 'they're not coming, we'd better make our way down the mountain ourselves'."

After being told, nine hours after the quake hit, that no help would be coming until the next morning, the freezing, hungry climbers were forced to make the perilous journey down the mountain.

"When we saw that all the conditions were right for the rescue and yet they had made the position that they were not coming, I was both angry but also determined to make it down on our own," Ms Dumlao said.

Ms Dumlao and her travelling partner made the perilous trek, followed by the other climbers, down to Laban Rata, a small village rest stop halfway up Mount Kinabalu.

"There were continuing tremors, continuing rustling of trees and continuing landslides that we could hear in the distance and it was quite fretful really, the potential of being caught in a landslide," she said.

The Malaysian government reported 13 people were killed in the disaster, and for Ms Dumlao the sight of death all around was confronting.

"When I saw the corpses, lying uncollected in the rock fall, that was probably the point when I realised that things were actually very, very bad, and fear set in," she said.

Government rescue effort a 'farce'

Arriving at Laban Rata, Ms Dumlao saw uniformed rescuers milling around the "chaotic scene".

"They were looking rather lost really, and it was the mountain guides who did most of the work attending to the injured, strapping people into stretchers, getting ready to take them down the mountain," she said.

"The whole government emergency response was a farce."

She said the effort appeared disorganised, and without helicopters, the rescue officers were of little help, stuck on foot and five hours away from the mountain's peak.

"They congregated in groups occupying resting spaces, sharing smokes and food that were meant for survivors," she said.

"A convenient helipad remain unused when they could have transported rescuers to the foot of the peaks. Instead "rescuers" arrived at 4:00pm, nine hours after the earthquake struck, on foot, much too tired to be of help."

Ms Dumlao said many more people could have been helped, and deaths may have been prevented, had helicopters landed in Laban Rata.

"If the helicopters had delivered some help earlier and landed in the helipad at Laban Rata, they may certainly have been able to attend to any injured people quite sooner," she said.

After seven hours trekking in the freezing dark, through treacherous rain and mountain-rattling tremors, the climbers reached the trek's starting point Timpohon. Upon their arrival at 12.30am, the site was strewn with medics, military and media.

All members of Ms Dumlao's group made it to the mountain's base safely. But she says emergency services let her, and many Malaysians down.

"I cannot find evidence for me to respect the government who have all the conspicuous demonstration of responsibility but none of the true act of it," she said.

"It was quite appalling when the rescue services got credit for something they did not do at all."

Local guides the 'real heroes'

Ms Dumlao said she was "so grateful" to mountain guide Jomius, who helped the trekkers to safety.

"The journey we took required the engineering of the guides who made abseiling equipment from the bare resources at hand," she said.

"The mountain guides were the heroes. They risked life and limb and made some difficult decisions that ultimately saved our lives, and had neither help nor recognition from the authorities.

"Many had homes affected in the quake. They lost friends and family yesterday. Yet they remained with us guiding us to safety till the very end."

She said she appreciated that the guides could have saved themselves much faster without the slow-moving climbers.

"Yet they stayed and did what they could to meet our needs," she said.

"I have great regard for the people around Mount Kinabalu who are defined by their culture spirituality and most of all their care for people."

Sabah quake: Two schoolboys evacuated back to Singapore

"I hope the boys have a good recovery,” said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, after the two boys arrived back in Singapore on air ambulances on Sunday.

SINGAPORE: Two male students from Tanjong Katong Primary School arrived back in Singapore on Sunday morning (Jun 7), following a strong earthquake in Sabah on Friday, said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat on Facebook.

"Early this morning, we managed to evacuate two boys and bring them back home on air ambulances. They got into hospital around 4.30am. Their parents flew back too and we are in touch with them to give them our every assistance," wrote Mr Heng.

“The boys have seen a lot and will need all our support. The parents said that their boys told them their teachers shielded them from boulders. I am so moved by their strength and selflessness. I hope the boys have a good recovery,” he added.

"it IS our Sacred soil"

My fellow travellers, despite that my mind wants to say a lot, I shall do my best to share with you the shortest version of this message. I am sure you enjoy going to places and countries. You may have your bucket list checked as done. And if in your bucket list, you have something like "Do photo shoots at <insert the place> naked", I do hope you pray for your children and family you love dearly for the rest of your waking moment. Fortunately for some of you, you did a great service to my people and killing innocent souls with your behaviour. We do have beliefs, you know. We are very proud of our Mountain, the highest in South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu.

But you may care less about all these despite the fact that it IS our Sacred soil. Haven't you ever heard of that? I mean Sacred as in you have to be respectful, you know. As a traveller, I would think you would have all these in mind: to respect the place, its country, its people, its culture and background, and so on... unless if you had no sense at all and are totally retarded. Yes, you have done it! You have climbed up the summit of our beautiful Mountain and as a plus, you also have made NAKED photos of you. Congratulations!

You DID it!!!

And then you left our soil after your proof and shared the world of your awesomeness. Know this, you did what you needed to do and purposely tainted our soil with your tiny dingy and your huge ego. It IS our Sacred Mountain, okay? Your ego and that little dingy wingy of yours have woken up our Big Guy. He is so upset today and did you know what happened to the cabins up there such as the Laban Rata? I am sure you have left your marks there too. It is a nice place to stay the evening/night while waiting till 2.30am because you have to reach the summit early to witness the beauty of God's creation. When the sun rises, it does amaze the climbers. I do hope you enjoyed the view too. So... a hut is gone.

Many climbers are still stranded up there, some hurt and did I hear that there were people who didn't make it to celebrate their next birthdays?!! Well! My fellow travellers... Please do congratulate yourself for being naive and disrespectful to our dear Sacred AkiNabalu. May you rest with a peaceful mind while having your beer and a good laugh at your checked item in your bucket list. (Edited the incorrect words - I don't want to be disrespectful to your parents.) For your info, I am a native Borneon and we speak Akinabalu language.

Please next time, when you go to a foreign land, do respect their customs, culture, etc. I do have another one request though, please add one more item in your bucket list: "Give and pay 'sogit' to Aki Nabalu". Sogit means a blessed offering. Or else.... well! Let's just pray...

The Revered Place Of The Dead is The Meaning of Akinabalu And Later On Known As Kinabalu

I know that to many Westerners, to those who claim to live in much civilised societies, and to those who staunchly vouch for a modern and 'progressive' mode of thought and action, ancestral beliefs and practices are shunned, dismissed, and laughed off as a marker of backwardness as well as ridiculous superstitions that should not have place in our modern world.

In certain instances, this is true. But in this particular instance, I beg to differ.

Undoubtedly, others have considered the cause of tremors that shook our beloved Sabah from three primary angles - cultural and spiritual; scientific and logical; and religious.

I could - though with much less articulation - convey my thoughts on the last two angles. But, here, I'd like to appeal to the angle that touches the hearts of all Sabahans no matter their creed and colour - the sacredness of Mount Kinabalu.

I am Dusun, though I sometimes jokingly refer to myself as an 'Orchard' (the English equivalent that does not capture the essence of who we are as peoples), because I am among those who do not speak the native tongue.

Yet still, though I lack the oral knowledge, my elders made sure that the youngsters in our family would still be connected to our roots, and they do this via storytelling the various myths and legends that surround our mountain.

To us - and Sabahans in general - the mountain is not simply a peak to be conquered.

She is 'Aki Nabalu', which means "the revered place of the dead". But I prefer the description my grandma - a mother widowed at a young age - told a young me as she looked longingly towards the mountain,

"The place where your grandpa has his holidays as he looks down over us to see if we're okay."

And this isn't something we, as a cultural group, and collectively as the peoples of Sabah, consider as merely folktale.

The Dusuns are the ancestral guardians of the mountain, and part of how we still uphold that role, even in times of modernity, is to observe the practices that our ancestors have put in place in order to safeguard Aki's sanctity.

But we are not selfish people. We want others to be able to bask in pride at her majestic stature, and marvel at her beauty.

So, we allow you in. We allow you to scale towards the top of the mountain.

But in return, we too, ask you to respect her.

Respect her for what she represents, and what she means to those whose lives, histories, and identities are so closely bound to hers.

When you - and I point to the group of ignorant tourists in this photo, and to those in the future who harbour perverse thoughts of 'raping' Aki's dignity - I am going to tell you, that when you chose to perform such a degrading and uncivilised act, you smeared mud and dirt over the faces of not only the Dusuns, but the millions of Sabahans who love Aki as much as her guardians do.

You did not merely offend, but you spat, and you stomped on our faces.

But most insultingly, you mocked our heritage.

You defiled Aki so proudly.

And now, as of today, she is forever deformed.

Disfigured.

Though Aki is 'broken', and we are saddened, angry, and frustrated, but we are not broken in spirit.

We won't give you that satisfaction.

PS: I have always put off climbing the mountain with the excuse that she's never going anywhere. Even the fact that my father and mother, who've climbed the mountain approximately 7 and 5 times respectively, was not enough to spur me on. Now, Aki is still standing, but the fact that her physicality has been altered, I feel that when I do climb her in the future, she won't be exactly the same. *cries*

PPS: If there are those who think that I am essentially saying the cause of the tremor is caused only by the indecent act, then I have to clarify that that was not my intention. As I mentioned earlier, there are three angles - culture, science, and religion - that people posit to give reason to the tremors. And these three angles can be complementary, they can be exclusive of one another, or they can be in contradiction with one another - depending on the individual. For instance, I relate to all three angles and do not find them in conflict as they appeal to myself:

Culturally: Because I am Dusun and Sabahan.
Scientifically: Because I also follow objective reasoning and logic.
Religious: Because I am Muslim.

But, like I also stated in the post, I chose to appeal to the cultural angle more because that angle I feel is the anchor and tie that bonds Sabahans best in this matter. This is because the scientific does not appeal to our emotional subjectivities that result from our culture, and the religious could exclude those who (do not) believe in certain faiths.

I hope this clears things up.

Be Proud of who you are!

Be Proud of who you are! Religion won't be able to change your ethnicity unless you do it yourself through self declaration publicly. Be Proud to be Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Bajau, Suluk, Chinese, Bugis and so on. That's the real message that admin wish to deliver to all of you.

Exception to Malay Sarawak because they are truly Malay Sarawak. Be Proud to be Malay Sarawak.

The reality is there is NO malay in Sabah until umno able to set up their base in Sabah, only then malay exist in 1990th.

Got it?

Bincangkan...
