Johnny Mositun says he issued his earlier statement on the ISA because the law enforcement authorities were not acting quickly on those who threaten national security.
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Deputy Speaker Johnny Mositun has clarified his earlier controversial stand on the Internal Security Act (ISA) with a caveat: of course he would not want the ISA back if current provisions can be amended and strengthened to enable the police to act fast.
“The alternative is to reinstate the ISA with suitable elements that will satisfy the people and at the same time not hinder the authorities in battling the threats to national security,” said Mositun in a statement adding that these were his personal views and not that of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) where he’s the Secretary-General.
Mositun was commenting on a statement by DAP Sabah Secretary Dr. Edwin Bosi that he should resign as Sabah Deputy Speaker on the grounds that he was not a fit and proper person to hold the post.
The PBS Secretary-General said that he only issued his earlier statement on the ISA because the law enforcement authorities were finding it difficult to act quickly against those who threaten national security.
“Existing laws severely restricted their ability to nip potential threats in the bud,” claimed Mositun. “Many anti-national elements in our country are getting bolder. Some are even calling for the secession of Sabah from Malaysia.”
PBS, he stressed, could not call for a return of the ISA because the party had fought long and hard for it to be repealed.
“I am not alone in calling for the return of the ISA,” he pointed out.
