How to deal with Sarawak and Sabah?

The perception in the two states is that current leaders in Putrajaya know very little about 1963.

Sarawakians from all walks from life just celebrated their July 22 Independence Day for only the second time since 1963. It will be the turn of the peninsula and Sabah on August 31. This will be followed by Malaysia Day on September 16.

In previous years, the emphasis was only on August 31, while September 16 has only been observed for the last two years, 50 years after Sabah and Sarawak came together with Malaya in 1963 in a federation.

Before 2013, the police in Sabah and Sarawak would arrest anyone who observed September 16 and shoo away speakers at any public gathering on the occasion.

The Sarawak Government was forced to acknowledge July 22, over the hostility of Putrajaya, after activists demanded that it state in no uncertain terms when their homeland became independent from British rule. They warned that they would not accept the official line in school text books that “Sabah and Sarawak achieved independence through Malaysia on August 31.”

Not surprisingly, the perception in Borneo is that the new generation of leaders in Putrajaya knows little about 1963.

The past has caught up with us to haunt our future.

The Inspector General of Police, Khalid Abu Bakar, for one, demanded to know on the eve of July 22 whether the Sarawak4Sarawakians (S4S) movement was working towards the secession of the state from the federation. He warned that the Sedition Act would be invoked against S4S activists. In response, S4S revised its slogan to the even more controversial “We are Sarawakians” for next year’s celebration of July 22.

In the streets of Kuala Lumpur, the perception of the man in the street is that Sabah and Sarawak are unhappy with Malaysia and can’t understand “why are these people, so far away, with us, when they can be on their own?”

Such views are particularly voiced among non-Malays, who tend to be more outspoken on the relationship across the South China Sea. Malays tend to hold their peace on the issue as they cannot fathom how it concerns them immediately or affects them. They can’t afford the luxury of going beyond immediate bread-and-butter issues, but these are also the main pre-occupation of the others in the peninsula, including the media.

The press in the peninsula takes notice of Sabah and Sarawak only when matters involving the two states’ relationship with the Federal Government are raised and turn acrimonious. Otherwise, it is not interested in covering Sabah and Sarawak. Kinabalu and Lahad Datu were seen as international issues.

Companies in the peninsula, and certain politicians, see Sabah and Sarawak only in terms of their bottom line.

In Sarawak, more so than in Sabah, not a day has passed since 1963 without the people waking up and asking themselves the question: “How did we get into this situation? Why are we with Malaya on the other side of this big sea? They are so far away, even further than the moon. At least the moon is something that we can see every night. Why can’t we be on our own?”

The way forward

The way forward for Sarawak, in the view of some people, including Adenan Satem, is full autonomy.

As has been stated by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, the Federal Government agrees in principle that Sabah and Sarawak should have more powers. Najib sees this as handing over the responsibility for federal departments in Sabah and Sarawak to locals and/or the Sabah and Sarawak governments. As a rule of thumb, he believes that “what they can do, let them do.”

He draws the line when it comes to the oil and gas resources of Sabah and Sarawak. For the people in Borneo, this issue is non-negotiable. Either Petronas has to play ball or leave the region.

The issue is simple: the people in Sabah and Sarawak want Putrajaya to get out of the way. They want to be masters of their destiny. They can no longer accept having the Federal Government tell them what to do or what not to do in their homelands.

Patently, there’s a need to focus on the relationship between Sabah and Sarawak with the peninsula generally and with the Federal Government particularly.

All politics must be about the restructuring of political power and the restructuring of resources. Sabah and Sarawak must have power over themselves and control over their resources.

The only way that the Federal Government can get the people of Sabah and Sarawak immediately on its side is to help them deal with the local elite, who are seen at the moment as simply squatting on them. Given this situation, it’s not defensible, no longer tenable or sustainable in going forward for the local elite to be seen as proxies, stooges and rogue elements of the Federal Government and working against the interests of the people.

Perkara 13 didalam 18 dan 20 Perkara yang asal (original) mengatakan bahawa;

Point 13. State Government

(a) The Prime Minister should be elected by unofficial members of Legislative Council;

(b) there should be a proper Ministerial system in North Borneo.

Gambar 1.0
Manakala Perkara 13 didalam 18 dan 20 Perkara yang telah diedit mengatakan bahawa;

Point 13. State Government

(a) The Chief Minister should be elected by unofficial members of Legislative Council;

(b) there should be a proper Ministerial system in North Borneo.

Gambar 1.1

Jawapannya BOLEH!

Lihat kepada Perkara Perkara 16: Keselamatan Perlembagaan (Point 16: Constitutional Safeguard) pada gambar 1.0 diatas tadi. Ia mengatakan bahawa;

Point 16: Constitutional Safeguard

No amendment modification or withdrawal or any special safeguard granted to North Borneo should be made by the Central Government without the positive concurrence of the Government of the State of North Borneo.

The power of amending the Constitution of the State of North Borneo should belong exclusively to the people in the State.

Sekarang, anda faham?

Akhir kata, pihak kami ingin menyampaikan satu teguran ikhlas buat CM Sarawak. Janganlah kerap kali mengatakan sesuatu perkara itu "Bodoh". Sekarang, siapakah yang kelihatan "Bodoh"?

Bumburing: Jeffrey not Umno Sabah/BN stooge

Jeffrey has all along been consistent in his struggle for Sabah rights which has been brushed aside even by Umno Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Tamparuli assemblyman Wilfred Bumburing said it was unbecoming of Sabah Opposition Chief Lajim Ukin to describe Bingkor assemblyman Jeffrey Kitingan as an Umno Sabah/Barisan Nasional (BN) “stooge” just because the latter and not he was included in the 40 per cent Committee negotiating with the Federal Government for the return of 40 per cent of the revenues collected in Sabah.

“Jeffrey has all along been consistent in his struggle for Sabah rights,” said Bumburing who is also President of the Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS). “Sabah’s rights have all these years been sidelined and brushed aside by the BN leaders especially after the entry of Umno.”

He pointed out that given the fact that Foreign Minister Anifah Aman organised the Public Forum which led to the formation of the 40 per cent committee, although seemingly hostile to Putrajaya, shows that leaders across the political divide are willing to come together in defence of Sabah’s constitutional rights. “Before Anifah entered the picture, Jeffrey had been brushed aside even in the assembly whenever he raised Sabah rights. “The atmosphere in the Sabah Assembly, dominated by Umno, turned hostile whenever Jeffrey spoke up on Sabah rights.”

“Even his own brother, Huguan Siou and Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan, criticized him and shouted him down.”

Bumburing called on Lajim to withdraw his statement against Jeffrey, apologise, and promise never to repeat something that would only further divide the Opposition and the people, and agree to support the work of the 40 per cent committee. “Lajim should stand with fellow Sabahan leaders and join in the struggle for the homeland instead of criticizing and coming up with insinuating comments on issues which he isn’t certain.”

Bumburing pointed out that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak met with the committee which he earlier proposed. “This fact should be appreciated by Lajim. Najib supporting the work of the Committee doesn’t mean that Jeffrey is being used as his tool.”

Bumburing expressed the hope that the 40 per cent Committee will not end up like so many other committees whose findings and reports ended up on a dusty shelf somewhere and were soon forgotten. “This seems to be the fate of the RCI Technical Committee headed by Pairin and the RCI Management Committee headed jointly by Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Chief Minister Musa Aman.”

Lajim fears that Jeffrey was being made use of by the Federal Government on the 40 per cent issue. “He was invited to meet with Najib recently on the 40 per cent issue while others including myself as Opposition Chief were left out.”

Jeffrey’s supporters, rebutting Lajim, pointed out that Jeffrey was the first to raise the 40 per cent issue.

The social media, coming to Jeffrey’s defence, has pointed out that it was the consensus among the people that the Bingkor assemblyman should be included in the committee. “He has been widely credited for raising the issue that 40 per cent of the revenues collected in Sabah by the Federal Government should be returned to the state government.”

“For the first Public Forum on the 40 per cent issue at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Jeffrey was initially not invited,” said Evelyn-Gobile Koh on Facebook. “But Sabahans pushed for his inclusion through the social media.”

“That was an eye-opener. He was invited again for the second Forum and by consensus from the floor it was suggested that Jeffrey should be chairman of the committee.”

S4S, Sadia may be charged

AG awaits police report before deciding on taking action against organisers of 722 Freedom, Independence Walk

KUCHING: Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) and Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia), the organisers of the July 22 parade here, may face police action if an ongoing investigation proves that they have breached the law.

According to Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the Attorney-General would determine whether the ‘722 Sarawak Freedom and Independence Walk’ rally held here last Wednesday, which was attended by about 5,000 people, was illegal.

The decision would be made after the police had completed their investigation into the matter including recording statements from the organisers, he added.

“While the event was done in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, the organisers however still needed police permission to determine the proper venue for the event,” he said.

“I am not saying the parade was illegal but have the organisers received any police approval prior to the event?

“If the police said no but the organiser still proceeded with the parade then it is clearly against the police directive,” he told reporters after attending a Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri at SMK Bandar Baru Samariang yesterday.

Meanwhile, Peter John Jaban, one of those who organised the rally, claimed that he was questioned by the police for six hours yesterday.

“Twelve other coordinators were similarly questioned,” he said.

He said the S4S was not a registered entity and that people had come from throughout the state voluntarily to express their feelings peacefully.

Peter said future rallies would be more entertainment-oriented.

“We may even seek government aid. We will use a new slogan, ‘We are Sarawakians’, instead of ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’ to show that it was an event for all Sarawakians, irrespective of race.

“We will welcome more people to participate, including members of political parties, as long as they do not turn up with their respective symbols and slogans,” he said.

Peter said the gathering was not about getting Sarawak to secede from Malaysia.

“It was all about Sarawak getting fairly treated as a founding member of the Federation of Malaysia,” he said.

He said that at no time during his speech at the rally did he touch on secession.

“The goal was clear. We celebrated Sarawak. All we want is a fair deal for our state as promised to us under the Malaysia Agreement 1963,” he said.

On another matter, Wan Junaidi said Petaling Jaya MP Tony Pua was among three individuals barred from leaving the country but Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli on the other hand was not barred.

‘We are Sarawakians’ slogan replaces controversial S4S

Man behind July 22 Independence Day Walk makes the change after being interrogated for six hours by police over his Sarawak4Sarawakians movement.

KUCHING: Radio Free Sarawak’s (RFS) Peter John Jaban, the man behind this year’s “722 Sarawak Independence Walk” has decided to change the slogan for next year’s walk from the controversial “Sarawak4Sarawakians (S4S) to the even more controversial “We are Sarawakians”.

There’s no mention of Sarawakians being Malaysians.

The Sarawak Chief Minister had earlier endorsed Sarawak4Sarawakians and did not think that it was a controversial slogan. “Sarawak should be for Sarawakians.”

Peter made the decision after he was interrogated for six hours by police on Thursday for organizing the July 22 walk in Kuching and elsewhere in the state in conjunction with Sarawak Independence Day. “Sarawak4Sarawakians was not registered because it’s an idea, a belief. It’s the same as the ‘agi idup, agi ngelaban’ (as long as there’s life, we fight) war cry of the Malaysian Rangers.”

“We are Sarawakian”, he said, would not be registered either because it’s also an idea, a belief, a movement.

“I was the only one interrogated for so long,” said Peter on being shabbily treated by the authorities. “The other 12 members of the organizing committee were only questioned for about 15 minutes.”

“I could not cancel ‘722 Sarawak Independence Walk’, the event, as demanded by Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar because people from all over Sarawak, 10,000 of them, had already gathered in Kuching alone.”

The police, he added, wanted to know whether S4S was working towards the secession of Sarawak from the Federation. “I told them no one talked about secession. We just wanted to observe Sarawak’s Independence Day which falls on July 22.”

August 31, he pointed out to the police, was the Independence Day for Malaya in 1957 and Sabah in 1963. “16 September is not Independence Day.”

Several leaders, he said, also spoke up for full autonomy for Sarawak. “If I am being seditious, then they are also being seditious.”

He pointed that among others, Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem and PRS Chief James Masing spoke on full autonomy during the official celebration in Kuching. Others, he said, came from SUPP, DAP, PKR, and UPP.

Sarawak4Sarawakians was inspired by the Sabah4Sabahans movement initiated by the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and then Sabah Foundation Director Jeffrey Kitingan in 1985.

Jawapan RASMI SSKM-SSU(UK) Kepada Pengguna Facebook Yang Bernama Deddy Mul

Pihak SSKM-SSU(UK) ingin membuat kenyataan RASMI ringkas berhubung dengan beberapa perkara yang telah dibangkitkan oleh seorang individu yang dikenali sebagai Deddy Mul's (nama Facebook). Antara perkara yang dibangkitkannya adalah seperti berikut;
Mungking saya akan sokong penuh perjuangan SSKM sekiranya terbukti beberapa perkara. Antaranya;

The History of Sarawak under its Two Rajahs

As I have been requested to write a preface to The History of Sarawak under its Two White Rajahs, one of whom I have the honour to be, I must, first of all, assert that I have had nothing to do with the composition or writing of the book, and 1 do not profess to be a writer, otherwise than in a very ordinary sense, having left school at the age of twelve to enter the Navy.

Chong: No need to question ‘walk’ organisers

KUCHING: State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen sees no reason for the police to question the organisers of the ‘722 Sarawak Freedom’ and ‘Independence Day Walk’ held on Wednesday.

He said the organisers did not commit any crime, thus the need for the police to question them should not arise.

“What is there to investigate and complain about? The police can only investigate when a crime has been committed. What is there to investigate about the walk since they did not commit any crime,” he told a press conference at DAP headquarters here yesterday, which was also attended by Pending and Batu Kawah assemblywomen Violet Yong and Christina Chiew respectively.

Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, was asked to comment on Police Commissioner Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman’s statement which stated that the involvement of S4S at the event in Song Kheng Hai rugby field had raised concerns since it was not a registered entity.

He was also quoted as saying that police would question the organisers which included Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia). Chong said S4S was just a concept which disagreed and agreed with certain issues, adding that even Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem accepted the concept advocated by S4S.

“There is nothing for the police to investigate. Just do your job to combat crimes and not to poke your nose into other areas.”

Benarkah Negara Sarawak Belum Merdeka?

By Haji Julaihi Haji Suut

Barangkali inilah jawapan terbaik untuk pakar sejarah Datu Dr Sanib Said. Kenyataan yang dibuatnya boleh diibaratkan sebagai "Shooting self in the foot any which way you turn".

Nampak dah?

Heed the people’s cry

Masing urges government to listen to the message sent out by the huge crowd celebrating the state’s Independence Day

KUCHING: The Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) rally on Wednesday is a wake-up call for the federal government which must acknowledge the message sent out by the participants.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing believed both the federal and state governments should take S4S rally seriously because of the composition of the crowd, the enthusiasm shown as well as their aspiration.

Amazed by the crowd which consisted of participants from all walks of life and from all ethnic groups including the disabled, the elderly and the young people, Masing said the federal government should not ignore it.

“What S4S is doing is correct. We must harness them. The federal government must not dismiss it as it may result in killing the messengers and missing the message. The federal government should listen to the message.”

Impressed by the enthusiasm shown by the young people who bought their full attire and their willingness to spend on painting colonial flags on their faces at the rally, the Baleh assemblyman hoped the enthusiasm could be ‘used, harvested and harnessed’ by the state government by including them in some of their official activities.

“I was impressed by them. There was this statement they painted on their vehicle – “We are not Chinese…we are not Dayak..we are not Malay. We are all Sarawakians.” Masing, also Minister of Land Development, said this showed that the participants had the right racial attitude and direction towards a better future.

“The racial attitude should also be emulated by Peninsular Malaysians,” he said. When contacted, Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia) president Sidi Munan said he gave his blessing to the S4S organiser, Peter John Jaban, to proceed with the assembly on three conditions, namely: no to the call for secession, adhere to the law and only seek recognition from the state government to commemorate July 22 as a public holiday for Sarawak.

“The police needed a registered society to organise the event, so I agreed that Sadia should be the registered society to apply for the permit on conditions they observed all the three things that I have told them to adhere to,” Sidi said.

Sidi asked Peter John to state the financier of the event and he was told that it would be self-financed by the participants who came from all over Sarawak.

“I asked this question because I do not want it to be infiltrated by any political party as Sadia is apolitical,” he said. Sidi also confirmed that Peter John was now an exco member of Sadia, being given the task to look after the social welfare of the Iban-based NGO and recruitment drive.

“He has been very helpful to those from the rural areas who are seeking jobs in towns and places like Kuching. He also helps us to look after the welfare of people who are poor and in need,” added Sidi.

He hoped the state government would listen to the voice of the over 5,000 people who attended the gathering and even engaged S4S in next year’s celebration of the same event.

“Actually I was surprised by the turn-out. We never expected such a big crowd. With such response from the people, we hope the state government will take their voices into consideration and declare July 22 as a public holiday for Sarawak to commemorate our Independence Day,” said Sidi.

Meanwhile, state CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said 13 people including Peter John were asked to give their statements after the event.

He said an investigation had been initiated against them based on their speeches under the Sedition Act.

“But on the whole the event was organised in an orderly manner and no untoward incident was reported,” said Dev Kumar.

Masing, Lo counter Sanib’s views on state’s independence

KUCHING: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing believes that Sarawak became an independent state on July 22, 1963.

Masing, who is state senior minister pointed out Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan was sworn in as chief minister on July 22, 1963 after a legal election process that was held in June-July 1963 and a cabinet was formed. Thus, he said a beginning of a self-rule for Sarawak began on July 22, 1963.

“Does self rule mean the beginning of a country’s independence? Yes. So from July 22, 1963, Sarawak was on its own as a self governing entity, “ Masing, who is Land Development Minister, told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

Masing, was responding to a claim by Sarawak Malay Graduates Association president Datu Dr Sanib Said that it is wrong to think that July 22 is Sarawak’s Independence Day.

Sanid was quoted as saying that there had been factual errors and misleading assumptions concerning this date, particularly in newspapers and social media by some quarters.

He said July 22 was just the beginning of a process towards independence and Sarawak achieved independence from the British for only a few hours on Sept 15, 1963, when the colonial governor Sir Alexander Waddell left for Britain.

“The next day, Datuk Abang Openg Sapiee was proclaimed as the governor and at the same time, we formed Malaysia and our independence continued. It is on Sept 16 that Sarawak became independent in Malaysia.”

Sanib, who is also a historian, said he has done many studies on this period and believed that there was need for people to know the background of July 22.

“July 22 was when the governor proclaimed the appointment of Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan as the chief minister and new Supreme Council members who formed the first ministerial cabinet in Sarawak.

“We were not independent yet because some powers were still with the colonial governor and the Queen in London. July 22 marks the process of becoming independent. All colonies under British government must go through similar process. It was to train to local people to run the country,” he said.

Masing, who is Baleh assemblyman said the formative years of Sarawak and Malaysia as a Federation had been subjected to some confusion and interpretations.

“In part, it was due to the hurried nature the Federation was created and a few ‘participants’ taking part in the acts such as the UK, Malaya, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and later Sarawak and Sabah were brought in.

“Thus we had confusion on Malaysia’s independence, for instance, was it Aug 31 or Sept 16? Did Sarawak attain its independence on July 22 or Sept 16?”

Meanwhile, UPP secretary-general George Lo opined that Sanib’s view that Sarawak was ‘not independent on July 22 because some powers were still with the colonial governor and the Queen in London’ was too myopic.

“With all due respect to him, that view is too myopic. We need only look across to Australia where, to this day, the Governor General is still the representative of the Queen in London.

“Sarawak was as independent a nation on July 22, 1963 as Australia is independent today. And Australia is not the only example. Look across the Commonwealth countries.”

Lo, who is also UPP Batu Lintang branch chairman, said the mere fact that some vestige of symbolic power remained with the colonial governor did not detract from the greater symbolism when the colonial flag was lowered and that the Sarawak flag raised and Sarawak had its own government and its own Chief Minister on July 22, 1963. He called on Sanib: “Please don’t try to rain on our parade as Sarawakians celebrate that historic day of independence on 22 July”.

‘Just fighting for our rights, nothing more’

KUCHING: The ‘722 Sarawak Freedom and Independence Day Walk’ that attracted over 5,000 people yesterday was all about Sarawakians wanting the state to be treated as equal partners.

It is not a call for the state to secede from Malaysia, assured its organising chairman, Peter John Jaban.

He added that the main aim of the rally was to show to all Malaysians that the multi-racial communities in the state could live in harmony and unity in their struggles to uphold the state’s rights. It was also being used as a platform to call for July 22 to be gazetted as a public holiday, to recognise Sarawak’s independence in the history curriculum, to reinstate English as the medium of instruction in schools, a call for greater infrastructure development in the rural areas, and for the federal government to grant the state fair equity in oil and gas revenue derived from the state resources.

“We are here to celebrate the historic day when Sarawak gained independence. I want the public to know the history and the right date of our historical past. We must unite and show solidarity.

“Sarawak obtained its independence from British colonial rule on July 22, 1963, prior to the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16 that year. This rally is not about calling for Sarawak to secede from Malaysia, but for the people to understand our history and to know our rights,” he told reporters when met after the rally at Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field at Padungan here yesterday.

The event to commemorate Sarawak’s independence from British Colonial rule was organised by Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia) and the Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) movement.

Happy with the big turnout, Peter hoped the government would listen to the messages conveyed by the people at the rally.

He said he would write to the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem on the demands of the people and the calls to review the Malaysian Agreement 1963 and Petroleum Development Act 1974.

The event proceeded peacefully even though Inspector-general of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar’s had advised it should not be held due to concerns it would be used to stir secessionist sentiments.

Peter thanked the police for allowing the rally to go ahead. He noted that police’s presence at the event was light.

He assured that the event would always remain apolitical because the movement did not want to be associated nor involved with any political bickering happening in the state and country.

Thousands of participants gathered as early as 7am at the Jubilee Ground car park before marching some two kilometres to the venue. A few gathered and walked from Padang Merdeka.

During the two-hour rally, a section of the crowd gathered together to form the figures ‘S4S’ and ‘722’.

A flag-raising ceremony was also held and the old state national anthem ‘Fairland Sarawak’ and ‘Ibu Pertiwiku” were played.

Various banners and placards in support of Sarawak’s rights and equality were displayed as the crowd chanted slogans such as ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’, ‘Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban’ and `Dum Spiro Spero’ during the rally.

Some of the participants were from other parts of the state, some from as far as Lawas and Belaga. Most were clad in black T-shirts with Sarawak for Sarawakians emblazoned on them and waving post independent Sarawak Kingdom flags. The crowd dispersed at around 10am, peacefully walking towards their earlier meeting points with police escort to direct traffic.

Sarawak leader says July 22 more important for state than August 31

A senior minister in Sarawak has joined the call to accord greater recognition to July 22, 1963, the day the state got its independence from its former colonial masters, the Borneo Post reported.

State minister of Land Development Tan Sri James Masing said the state should officially recognise July 22, instead of August 31, which was the date the Federation of Malaya received its in independence in 1957.

He added that Sarawakians should know the significance of the July 22 independence day for their homeland two months before the formation of Malaysia on September 16 of the same year.

“July 22 should have been honoured long ago but somehow the date was overshadowed by August 31, which has nothing to do with us.

“The date of Sarawak’s independence must be put in the correct perspective for the younger generations to understand. For historical purposes, let the young people know. We have to get the facts right,” Masing was quoted as saying by Borneo Post.

He also supports the Sarawak United People’s Party’s (SUPP) call on chief minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem to declare July 22 as Hari Sarawak.

“July 22 should have been honoured long ago but somehow the date was overshadowed by August 31, which has nothing to do with us.

“The date of Sarawak’s independence must be put in the correct perspective for the younger generations to understand. For historical purposes, let the young people know. We have to get the facts right,” Masing said, according to the Borneo Post.

He added that his hope is for all Sarawakians to be proud of the fact that Sarawak was already an independent nation prior to the formation of Malaysia as an equal partner with Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and the Federation of Malaya.

On the issue of declaring July 22 a public holiday in the state, Masing believes it is not as important as the whole state recognising the date as Sarawak’s day of independence.

“Let us settle this at another time. Maybe later on, as this is not an urgent matter at the moment. After all, when the state officially recognised Malaysia Day on September 16, there had never been a public holiday.

"More importantly, I am very pleased that the state government has been honouring July 22  for the last two years,” he was quoted as saying by the Borneo Post. – July 23, 2015.

Anifah, Jeffrey deserve total support for raising Sabah rights and issues - ex CM

KOTA KINABALU: Foreign Minister Datuk Anifah Aman and STAR Sabah chief, Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan have been hailed for fighting for Sabah’s rights, especially the “40 per cent entitlement” for the state.

Former Chief Minister, Datuk Yong Teck Lee said it is only now after 52 years of federal budgets that the "entitlement" has been successfully brought to the mainstream of Malaysian policy making.

“The brilliance of Dr. Jeffrey in discovering this anomaly, and the courage of Anifah Aman to take this up all the way to the Prime Minister, deserve our recognition, said Yong in a statement Wednesday.

“Anifah is taking great risks offending UMNO, and the Prime Minister. He might even lose his job over this claim and other Sabah rights, and as such, both leaders deserve Sabahans' support in the fight for our rights.”

Responding to remarks by yet another ex chief minister, Tan Sri Harris Mohd Salleh’s remark that there’s no need for a committee to look into the payment of the entitlement, Yong countered:

“I ask, Tan Sri Harris, are you not a Sabahan too?”

“Where Harris, myself and other previous Chief Ministers did not succeed, we should now help the new generation of Sabahans to do so. I believe that none of the ex-Sabah Chief Ministers and ex-Finance Ministers had known about this "40 per cent" proviso in the federal constitution.

“To know and not do anything would have been wrong. The question now is what will the current Sabah government and our Sabahan federal ministers do about it?

Yong, the Sabah Progressive Party president said he agreed with Harris that other aspects of Sabah rights should also be looked at.

“For a start, Harris could use his influence to seek the return of Labuan and federal agencies to Sabah, to get FELDA to hand over its 200,000 acres of land to settlers, tighten immigration into Sabah, increase oil royalties for Sabah and secure Sabah rights over the newly discovered oil and gas at ESSZONE,” Yong asserted.

He also quipped that Harris should not be cursed for failing to claim the "entitlement", citing that there have been six Prime Ministers, nine federal finance ministers, 13 Sabah Chief Ministers and nine Sabah Finance ministers who also “missed” the fact.

“And there have been countless officers at the Attorney General Chambers and finance ministries at both state and federal levels responsible for drawing up the budgets,” he added.

Yong said he could give his best input and risk being criticised and it mattered not that his term as Chief Minister 17 years ago was for two out of 52 years, but now that an anomaly has been discovered, everything possible should be done to right it.

He reiterated that with the federal government now dependent on Sabah and Sarawak, a window of opportunity exists for the Borneo states to redress the injustices of the past.

Despite police ban, 10,000 throng Sarawak independence walk

KUCHING, July 22 — An estimated 10,000 people turned up today at the Song Kheng Hai field here for the Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) “Freedom and Independence Walk”, ignoring a previous warning by the police not to participate in the event.

According to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar yesterday, the police had received information that some parties were planning to use the event to incite Sarawakians into calling for the state’s secession from Malaysia.

But despite the warning, organisers decided to proceed with the gathering today as many of its participants from outside Sarawak were already in town for the event.

The gathering went on peacefully with no reports of any untoward incidents.

Chief organiser Peter John Jaban said an estimated 10,000 people turned up for the event meant to mark Sarawak’s independence from the British.

The walk by the Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (SADIA) and the S4S movement was organised to demand, among others, that July 22 to be made a public holiday to mark Sarawak’s independence.

“On this day in 1963, Sarawak gained its independence from the British and for 55 days, we were a sovereign nation before we formed the Federation of Malaysia with Malaya, Sabah (then known as North Borneo) and Singapore on Sept 16, 1963,” Jaban said.

A large crowd turned up at the Freedom and Independence Walk at Song Kheng Hai Ground in Kuching.

He said the organisers will hold an even bigger gathering next year if July 22 is not made a public holiday.

He said those that formed the federation of Malaysia were meant to be equal partners, but over the years, Sarawak and Sabah were downgraded to state status.

Singapore was expelled from the federation in 1965.

He said history textbooks should be rewritten, pointing out that the fact that Sarawak had gained its independence on July 22 is not mentioned.

Jaban then called for a review of the Malaysian Agreement 1963 and the National Petroleum Development Act 1994, and urged for autonomy for the state on matters like education.

He also urged for tighter immigration control.

During the gathering, an old Sarawak flag was hoisted by four cyclists as the state anthem “Ibu Pertiwiku” was played.

Thousands came out to celebrate Sarawak independence day

KUCHING: Over 5,000 people attended the ‘722 Sarawak Freedom and Independence Day Walk’ at Song Kheng Hai rugby field here today, calling for better treatment and equal rights to be accorded to the state by the federal government.

Among others, the rally also called for July 22 to be gazetted as a public holiday, recognition of Sarawak independence in the school history curriculum, reinstatement of English as the medium of instruction in schools, greater infrastructure development in rural areas and for the government to grant the state fair equity in oil and gas.

The event, to commemorate Sarawak independence day from British Colonial rule on July 22, 1963 was organised by Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia) and Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) movement. The highly-charged rally, albeit peaceful, was held in order and went without a hitch.

“I want the public to understand history and the right dates of our historical past. Sarawak obtained its independence on July 22, 1963 prior to the formation of Malaysia. This rally is not about calling to Sarawak to secede from Malaysia, but for the people to understand our history and to know our rights,” the rally’s organising chairman Peter John Jaban told reporters during the event.

Thousands of participants gathered as early as 7am at the nearby Jubilee Ground to march towards the venue in Padungan while some gathered and walked from Padang Merdeka. The two-hour rally also saw the people lining up in an ‘S4S’ formation for a photocall and participating in a flag-raising ceremony.

Various banners and placards in support of Sarawak’s rights and equality were displayed as the crowd chanted slogans such as ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’, ‘Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban’ and ‘Dum Spiro Spero’ during the rally. Participants came from all over the state with some as far as Lawas and even Belaga.

Most were clad in black T-shirts with ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’ emblazoned on them and waving post-Sarawak Kingdom independence flags. The people also sang the old state national anthem ‘Fairland Sarawak’ as well as ‘Ibu Pertiwiku’ in a show of solidarity and allegiance to Sarawak.

Despite warning from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar that the rally could be used to incite secession of Sarawak from Malaysia, the presence of uniformed police was light. Khalid had advised organisers to call off the gathering citing security reasons.

The crowd dispersed at around 10am, peacefully marching towards their meeting points at Jubilee Ground and Padang Merdeka amid police escort.

Tiba masa Sarawak iktiraf tanggal 22 Julai: Masing
