KOTA KINABALU: Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan advised alleged “secessionists” in Borneo to sit down and discuss with the Federal Government if they had any problems.
At present, he claimed, the “secessionists” were being influenced by certain politicians who had lost in the 13th General Election last year and had latched on to the issue for their political survival.
“These people were rejected because the people in Sabah did not want to accept their politics of wanting to split the country,” he said in a statement.
“Even if there are problems from the perspective of the federal and Sabah Governments, we can discuss and not instigate people.”
He was commenting on a report that Putrajaya is willing to talk to “separatists” and listen to them.
Abdul Rahman said that he “cannot accept” what was going on in Borneo currently as things could easily get out of hand. He hopes that the police will continue to monitor the situation and take action especially against those “instigating from outside the country”.
He did not mention any names.
Sabah police have since mentioned that Sabahan activist Doris Yap Jones, who heads the UK-based Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia (SSKM) FaceBook Group, is among those under watch.
Other UK-based rights NGOs are Borneo’s Plight in Malaysia Foundation (BoPIM) and the Borneo Rights International (BRI), both headed by Sabahans Daniel John Jambun and Kanul Gindol respectively. Both were engaged in multicornered fights in the last General Election.
Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, in a recent statement welcoming talks with separatists, specifically mentioned Bingkor Assemblyman Jeffrey Kitingan who heads the United Borneo Front (UBF) “who can’t get along with other politicians and always wants to be the boss”.
